A company can obtain the B Corporation license if it meets high standards in areas such as responsible business practices, care for the environment, and transparent operations. For Pink Gellac, joining the B Corp community underscores her commitment to operating as responsibly as possible as a cosmetics company. Strietman: ‘The beauty industry, particularly nail polish, faces challenges in becoming more sustainable. However, we are committed to leading the way and aim to be an example for other brands in this industry.’
Actions Taken So Far
Becoming a B Corp means rolling up your sleeves and making meaningful steps forward. The process helped Pink Gellacto clearly lay-out where they are today, and how and what they can further develop in the future.
1. Development of Sustainability Strategy
Pink Gellac developed a sustainability strategy with a clear roadmap for the next four years, helping them commit to making a bigger impact across their community, products, packaging, supply chain, and their team. Pink Gellac has already initiated or implemented several initiatives:
- Sustainable packaging project: Pink Gellac strives to have most of their packaging FSC®-certified by the end of 2024. Shipping boxes have been significantly reduced in size. In addition, they are on track to have 90 percent of the accessory packaging plastic-free by the end of this year. At the beginning of 2025, a smaller, modular, and plastic-free packaging for the best-selling starter sets will be available.
- Code of conduct - ethical practices in the supply chain: Pink Gellac established a code of conduct that has now been signed by 90% of their product suppliers. This sets a high standard for guidelines in sustainability, social responsibility, and ethical business practices. Pink Gellac is working to bring the remaining 10% on board by 2025.
- Reporting environmental impact: Pink Gellac is working hard to reduce direct emissions through an Environmental Management System (EMS). By the end of 2024, the company will have fully mapped its direct emissions. Efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the supply chain are actively progressing.
- Returns reduction: Since 2023, Pink Gellac has reduced the return rate to 0.6 percent, a decrease compared to the 0.8 percent in 2022. For 2024, they are once again aiming for the low percentage achieved in 2023.
- Sustainable shipping options: Pink Gellac has renewed their online checkout together with their fulfilment partner Monta. Now, customers can choose more sustainable shipping options with partners like Budbee.
2. Self-Expression and Social Impact
For Pink Gellac, the impact extends beyond internal activities. Pink Gellac has been supporting Pink Ribbon since 2023, and this partnership was continued and expanded in 2024. The brand has also refined its mission to focus on promoting self-expression, particularly for people from minority groups. Through the Theory of Change model, Pink Gellac is aligning with meaningful themes that have long-term social impact. Starting in 2025, this mission will serve as a guiding principle for all campaigns and events.
3. Building a Positive Work Culture
Pink Gellac is committed to fostering a positive and inclusive workplace where employees can thrive. Recent initiatives include:
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DE&I): The company has implemented a DE&I policy and reaffirmed that equal pay is ensured for employees from different backgrounds. All employees have completed a DE&I training, and it is part of the onboarding process for new hires.
- Supporting well-being: Recently, ‘Open Up’ was introduced, a platform that provides employees and their families with free and unlimited access to mental health and well-being support.
- Monitoring employee satisfaction: An annual employee survey is conducted. The most recent score was 9 out of 10, indicating a high level of satisfaction among employees.
Sustainability and responsible business practices are an ongoing process for the Hilversum-based company. Priorities for the near future include:
- Sustainable procurement: Pink Gellac will work even more closely with suppliers to ensure they meet strict environmental and social standards. New suppliers must adhere to these values by signing a code of conduct.
- Supplier certifications: The company already supports its suppliers in obtaining social and environmental certifications; this will be further expanded.
- Sustainable raw materials: Pink Gellac is exploring bio-based options for her gel polish as part of her ongoing commitment to creating more sustainable products.
- CO2 emission reduction: In collaboration with the distribution centre Monta, Pink Gellac is focused on reducing the CO2 emissions from shipments, working towards carbon-neutral deliveries with all their delivery partners. Additionally, they continue to further optimize their product and shipping box packaging.
