Fact or Myth | Episode 2

In this episode, we discuss three statements: are they facts or myths? Marijn Kuipers talks to our expert, Professor Dr An Goossens.

Myth: “If you use the product correctly, its composition doesn’t matter much.”

Unfortunately, some products on the EU market are unsafe or non-compliant with EU legislation. This includes products from outside the EU and those containing substances like HEMA and di-HEMA, which are not permitted for home use. Other strong allergens* still allowed in home-use products might be banned in the future. For more details, refer to Prof. Dr An Goossens’ expert opinion.

* These substances are not present in Pink Gellac gel polish.

Fact: “Spilling gel polish on your skin once doesn’t automatically mean you’ll develop an allergy.”

Correct. While contact should be avoided, not everyone who comes into contact with an allergen will develop a contact allergy. We discuss the contributing factors and why risk varies greatly between products.

Myth: “It doesn’t matter which lamp you use for your manicure.”

This is indeed a myth. A lamp that doesn’t cure the polish properly increases the risk of allergy development. Buy a CE-certified lamp from a European supplier—preferably the same brand as your polish, since it's tested in that combination. Always follow the curing time specified in the instructions.
