Nail Polish vs. Gel Polish: What's the Difference and Which One Suits You?

Do you love beautifully manicured and polished nails but don’t want to bother reapplying and touching them up every few days? Gel polish offers the perfect solution! This nail treatment gives your nails extra strength and a stunning colour that lasts up to two weeks.

We’ve all used regular nail polish, but what exactly is gel polish, and why should you consider switching? In this blog, we compare nail polish and gel polish, helping you decide which one is the better choice for you.

What is Nail Polish? And What are the Benefits?

Nail polish is a liquid that you apply directly to your nails with a brush. It air dries. The application is straightforward: you apply a base coat, followed by one or two layers of colour, and a top coat to protect and add shine. Nail polish takes about 30 seconds to 2 minutes before you can apply a new layer. It then takes 20 to 60 minutes to fully dry. It is very affordable and available in various colours and finishes, such as glossy and matte. It is easy to remove with nail polish remover. Did you know that we also have a range of nail polish colours?! These have a gentle peel-off formula and can be removed without remover. Discover them here.

What is Gel Polish? And What are the Benefits?

Gel polish, also known as gel nail polish or semi-permanent nail polish, is a hybrid between regular nail polish and gel. It is applied in thin layers, just like regular nail polish, but each layer must be cured under a UV or LED lamp. Each layer needs to cure for 60 seconds under the lamp and lasts for two weeks. This curing process ensures that gel polish is instantly ‘dry’, long-lasting, and chip-resistant, reducing the need for frequent touch-ups. By dry, we mean polymerised or cured. Each layer feels sticky after curing, but this can be wiped off with cleaner after the Shine Top Coat, allowing you to do anything without damage. If you have used one of our other Top Coats, wiping is no longer necessary. Gel polish gives a professional, smoother appearance compared to regular nail polish and can also be finished with various finishes, such as matte, glossy, and glittery. Discover all our top coats here.

Gel polish can be removed in 3 different ways; read more about it here. You need to know how gel polish works, but once you’ve done it a few times, you’ll be ready in no time.

The Difference in Application Techniques

Nail Polish:

  1. Prepare nails by pushing back cuticles, filing nails, and cleaning them.
  2. Apply a base coat to protect the nail from discolouration. Let it air dry.
  3. Apply one or two layers of colour. Let each layer air dry.
  4. Apply a top coat for shine and protection. Let it air dry.
  5. Be careful to avoid damage!
  6. Enjoy beautiful nails for 1 to 2 days.

Gel Polish:

  1. Prepare nails by pushing back cuticles, filing nails, degreasing with Cleaner, and applying Prep Booster.
  2. Apply a Base Coat and cure under a UV/LED lamp.
  3. Apply one or two layers of colour, curing each layer under the lamp.
  4. Apply a Top Coat and cure again.
  5. Remove the sticky layer with Cleaner, if necessary. Then you don’t need to be as careful about bumps.
  6. Enjoy beautiful nails for 14 days.

Advantages of Gel Polish Over Nail Polish

While nail polish is quick and easy to apply, it tends to chip and fade faster. Gel polish, on the other hand, offers a long-lasting, shiny finish that lasts for weeks without chipping. Additionally, gel polish strengthens the nails, which is especially useful for people with weak or brittle nails.

Does Gel Polish Exist That Air Dries?

Simply put, the answer is no. There are nail polish products on the market that claim to give a gel polish look. However, this remains nail polish, which may be somewhat thicker in texture.
